Starting from version 2.4.6, Smile for OS X stores files under a new format. While Smile 2.4.6 and higher will recognize both the old and the new formats, Smile 1.8.8 recognizes only the old format. If you attempt to open in Smile 1.8.8 a text document, a script document or a dialog document which was saved by Smile 2.4.6 or higher, you will probably experience a severe crash.

• We recommend that you download and install Patch1881. This patch for Smile 1.8.8 (really a new version of the "Application" Class Script) will prevent Smile from crashing in the circumstances quoted above.
• Once the patch installed, you can open in Smile 1.8.8 text documents and script documents which were saved by Smile 2.4.6 or higher. Though, they will loose their custom properties, including the window's object script if they have any.

AppleScript 1.8.3 brought several changes to the file naming conventions, in an effort by Apple to maintain compatibility with OS X. Those changes broke Smile 1.8.4 (thus making AppleScript 1.6 necessary to run Smile). Smile 1.8.8 is compatible with both AppleScript 1.8.3 and AppleScript 1.6. (the AppleScript versions between 1.6 and 1.8.3 should be avoided)
